Thoughts on Galatians #8

John Stott speaks of the “three-dimensional attachment which we gain when we are in Christ – in height, breadth and length.” Height concerns eternity: In Christ we belong to God “for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith” (3:26). The Almighty God is not the “dear Lord and Father of mankind”. While he is the Lord of all because he is the Creator of all and while, we may add, he loves all his creatures, he is the Father only of Christ and those who belong to him.

Breadth concerns society: In Christ we belong to each other “for all of you are one in Christ Jesus” (3:28). Regardless of their race, rank or sex all believers belong together in one body. Our diversity need not be a barrier to fellowship.

Length concerns history: In Christ we belong to Abraham – “if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring; heirs according to the promise” (3:29). We have become part of a long history of believers who have put their trust in God’s promises.
